Titanium Dioxide
Titanium dioxide is a bright white substance known for its excellent physical and chemical stability, high refractive index, and exceptional opacity. It provides whiteness and coverage to paints, coatings, plastics, paper, inks, foods, pharmaceuticals, and most toothpaste, while also used in desizing chemical textiles, improving the abrasion resistance of chemical textiles, and for coloring purposes. Due to its electronic properties, it finds wide applications in various other fields such as electronics (MLCC, panel optics), glass, and welding rod coatings.
Manufacturing of Titanium Dioxide
There are two main processes: the sulfate process and the chloride process.
Sulfate Process |
Chloride Process |
A longstanding and simple technology |
A newer technology |
Uses low-grade, inexpensive ores |
Requires high-grade ores |
Batch production |
Continuous production |
Generates large amounts of waste |
Produces small amounts of toxic waste: Cl2 and TiCl4 |
Recycling and recycling of chlorine is possible |
Expensive pollution control |
Produces both anatase and rutile pigments |
Produces only rutile pigments |
Titanium dioxide generally comes in two forms: anatase and rutile.
Rutile
Rutile titanium dioxide exhibits higher chemical and physical stability. The pigment is in dense needle-like crystal form, with high density, high gloss, good dispersibility, low oil absorption, excellent weather resistance, and strong covering power.
Mainly used in architectural and industrial coatings, corrosion-resistant coatings, inks, plastics, and coatings.
Anatase
Anatase titanium dioxide has a smaller crystal form and a bluish hue compared to rutile titanium dioxide, with higher purity. It has remarkable whiteness, making it less glossy, with very good whiteness and hue.
Mainly used as a white pigment in paper, paint, toothpaste, plastics, rubber. It is also used in electronics components such as televisions (CRTs) and capacitors, and as a catalyst/photocatalyst, photocatalytic electronic transfer (PET) reactions, etc.
